Have You Seen or Heard ‘Exploding Trees’ Near You?

As the country experiences record-cold temperatures, tons of snow and ice, some of us have learned of scientific phenoms that sound straight out of a bad sci-fi movie.

First, we heard of “frost-quakes” but now part of the country is under an “exploding tree risk.”

Yes, you read that right, exploding trees.

Apparently, in extreme cold, the sap inside a tree freezes and expands, which builds pressure as the bark and wood contract at different rates. If the stress gets intense enough, the trunk or limb can fracture, resulting in a loud crack that sounds kind of like a gunshot.

They say it’s not a cartoonish type of blast like what we’re all imagining when we hear “exploding trees” but footage of it happening leads us begging to differ.

Have you ever seen this happening near you?
