The Beastie Boys Reveal How They Discovered the Truth About Gold Records
When you think of artists that would expose the truth about the music industry, The Beastie Boys may not be at the top of that list, but here they are.
Recently, Mike D and Ad-Rock stopped by Conan's podcast "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend" where they revealed that their gold record, given to them by the RIAA for "Paul's Boutique" wasn't even actually their record.
As Ad-Rock describes it, they were looking at the record on the wall that had their label with all nine songs listed on the side, but he could tell the gold record itself only had four songs on it. They then popped the record into a player to find out it was actually just four Barry Manilow songs on there.
Now, Conan is calling for a "a massive ‘Quiz Show style investigation’" in which artists try to confirm their gold records are golden versions of their own records or not.
